Originally built as a photographic set for Geoff Hamilton’s Practical Gardening Course book, the Rock Feature demonstrates how sandstone rocks can create an attractive home for alpine plants.

Flat stones are arranged in a circular, tiered design, creating planting pockets at different levels. The combination of stone, compact conifers and colourful plants makes the most of a relatively small space, with interest throughout the year.

Alpines need excellent drainage, so the heavy clay soil at Barnsdale has been improved with equal parts soil, coarse grit and garden compost. This creates the conditions these plants need to thrive, alongside perennials more commonly found in garden borders.

Spring brings a colourful display, followed by flowers through summer and autumn. Even in winter, evergreen foliage, interesting textures and compact conifers ensure the feature retains its appeal.

The Rock Feature offers inspiration for anyone looking to grow alpines or introduce a distinctive rock garden into a smaller space.
